Women and girls are among the most affected by climate change, yet lacking data often result in gender-blind local climate action and policies. Her4Climate is centred on the knowledge and capacities of women in urban areas. The participatory tool provides a framework for assessing women’s exposure, sensitivity and capacity to respond to climate change in cities in 3 dimensions: (1) Health and Wellbeing, (2) Built and Natural Environments, (3) Governance and Decision-making, and aims at promoting their participation and agency in the design and management of urban climate adaptation initiatives and plans.
Tool Outcome
Her4Climate is a tool for local governments and urban practitioners to facilitate the integration of gender perspectives into climate adaptation planning in cities. The tool enables understanding the key climate hazards in urban areas, as well as their gender implications, and women responsive capacity. The two-level indicator framework informs the design and management of gender-responsive climate adaptation policies, strategies, and pilot interventions in cities. Applying Her4Climate empowers women of target communities to become active agents of change for designing gender-sensitive and resilient urban infrastructures.
Sustainability Criteria
The tool examines exposure and adaptive capacity to short- and long-term gendered climate risks through the lens of three dimensions :
• Health and Wellbeing : Tenure Security, Housing, Mobility, Infrastructure, Ecosystem
• Built and Natural Environments : Food Security, WASH, Education, Work and earnings, Disability/illness
• Governance and Decision-making : Climate hazard awareness and action plans, Community Cohesiveness, Civic engagement and political leadership, Technology, Financing for adaptation
