Description
The DGNB System for Districts is a planning and optimization tool which helps to create sustainable and livable districts. There are three types of certifications available across the project lifecycle: (1) a pre-certification for urban development plans, (2) a certificate for planning and development of projects that are at least 25% completed and (3) a final certificate for districts that are at least 75% completed. Assessments are undertaken by independent, DNGB-trained auditors. A final conformity check is undertaken by DGNB before the award of the certification.
Tool Outcome
Depending on the score achieved, there are four different awards levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Pre-certification is valid for 3 years, certification for planning and development for 5 years and certification for completed projects is valid indefinitely.

The tool evaluates the sustainability of projects based on the following criteria:

– Resource consumption and waste generation (3 sub-criteria)
– Lifecycle costs
– Economic development (2 sub-criteria)
– Health, comfort and user satisfaction (7 sub-criteria)
– Functionality / Design for all
– Technical quality (8 sub-criteria)
– Planning quality (4 sub-criteria)
– Construction quality assurance (5 sub-criteria)
– Site quality (4 sub-criteria)
