Global Agendas

How infrastructure is mentioned in
global agendas for development

Infrastructure at the Core of Global Development Agendas

The central role of infrastructure as a driver of development was not always acknowledged, and it was only in the last decade that the multidimensional scope of sustainability in infrastructure development reached global development agendas. Infrastructure enables societies to function and economies to thrive. As such, infrastructure is crucial for development at the focalpoint of many global agendas. It can empower a sustainable multidimensional development in line with many of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As the backbone for development, infrastructure has the potential to support and strenghten the resilience of not only economic, but also environmental and social development.  Investments in sustainable infrastructure are seen as the “key to (…) reigniting growth, delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals, and reducing climate risk”.

Infrastructure & Sustainable Development
SDG 9 ‘Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure’
as part of the Agenda 2030 calls for more sustainable and more resilient infrastructure. While infrastructure represents an SDG in itself, infrastructure development also influences between 72 – 92% of other targets of the Agenda 2030.
